Concussion... When is it Safe for Sports Again? The Tucson J has the answers through testing to keep kids healthy The Tucson J now offers Biodex Balance Assessment as part of a Concussion Management Program. Balance testing is a key component of best practices for concussion management and is endorsed as such by authorities treating this growing concern among school-aged children. Biodex Balance Assessment, is used by leading hospitals, rehabilitation centers and national sports teams throughout the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate up to 3 million sports-related concussions occur annually in the U.S., with school-aged children making up the majority of cases. Athletes returning to play prematurely are at a higher risk of injury and a second concussion. The rate of reoccurrence is just as concerning and can be more damaging. The J can now enroll athletes in a Concussion Management Program which includes a simple baseline test of balance, an important first step in the event of an injury in the future. The test takes only minutes, yet in the event of a concussion, provides valuable information which can be applied to post-injury evaluation and rehabilitation. Should a concussion occur athletes are retested and results are compared to the baseline as well as to age- and gender-specific normative data. Athlete information is stored with the ability to generate pre- and post-injury objective reporting to aid in managing the recovery process and return to activities. For questions or to make an appointment for your Baseline Balance Assessment, please contact Mike Malone, Fitness Center Coordinator at 520-299-3000 x120 or [email protected]. JPlay Gets a Facelift! Taking Babysitting to a Whole New Level! Art Classes, Lesson Plans, Fitness & More! The J has improved our JPlay Babysitting program and has added additional operating hours. The New JPlay provides multiple environments for children ages 6 ½ weeks through 11 years old. The new program will include art classes, fitness classes, lesson plans and more! With more space and more staff we will offer children enriching experiences to play, create, and have fun while parents work on themselves. The first step is to introduce to you our new JPlay supervisor, Adrian Maiuri, who starts on August 10th. Adrian has been with the Tucson J for more than five years as a teaching assistant and most recently one of our PreK teachers. She is very excited to continue the development of JPlay into a program all children will look forward to and enjoy. An additional added feature will be space and programing for older children. We now offer the option for children ages 7 - 11 to use the Youth Lounge. Let the older kids have fun in an age-appropriate, safe, supervised area! Pool tables, computers, ping pong, video games and more! The price per hour per child is $4.00, and the parent must be in the building for the duration of the babysitting service. More information will be available on our website later in July. We hope you and your children will enjoy the new JPlay! 10  July 2017 | J Life Magazine  Rami Sarid and Family In Memory of Dror Sarid Ms. Margaret Baskin Dr. and Mrs. Earl Surwit Jeff Artzi In Honor of being named ‘Man of the Year’ but he Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona Bonnie Sedlmayr-Emerson and Randy Emerson Todd Rockoff In Honor of being named ‘Man of the Year’ by the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona Bonnie Sedlmayr-Emerson and Randy Emerson The Family of Donald L.
