Volume 4, Issue 1 Page 5 In the Guidance Department During the few months of school, the Guidance Department has been introducing themselves to new stu- dents and meeting with all grades 6, 7, and 8 students. We were also very excited to meet with our par- ents on red, white and blue house curriculum nights. November 19 and 26 will be parent/teacher confer- ences this year. Each guidance counselor will have a day and time they will be available if you would like to meet with us. More information will come out next month. Counselors will continue to present ac- tivities and have discussions with students on various topics throughout the year focusing on school cli- mate, peer relationships and character building. At this point in time, you should have already received your child’s first Progress Report issued on Fri- day, October 5th. The First Report Card will be sent home on November 9. Counselors will meet with students who have grades below passing to set up a plan for improvement. Please make sure you have the opportunity to look over your child’s report card/progress report and have a conversation with them about their progress. One of the most important tools your child has that will assist them at JFK is their agenda book. All students have received one. Please check to see that your child is using it daily. If you need to meet with teachers throughout the year, please contact your child’s guidance coun- selor and set up a team meeting. Team meeting time is an opportunity for parents and teachers to col- laborate concerning student needs and develop a plan for success. Grade 6 Teams meet Period 1 at 8:00, Grade 7 Teams meet period 3 at 9:50, and Grade 8 at 1:45. You can also view your child’s progress on Power School and keep track of grades and assignments. At JFK, students have the opportunity to stay after school for extra help, however, they need to make arrangements with their teachers to see what days they are available. We also encourage your child to join a sports team or club. There are a wide variety of activities to choose from. A list of clubs has been sent home, extra lists are in the guidance office, and they are also available on the school website. Joining after school activities helps each child feel connected to their school environment. Students who feel more connected do better in school. At JFK, we also have Student Advisory once a month. This is an important component of a Student Success Plan. All students and staff participate monthly in a variety of activities that help bring students and staff closer together. The focus is to connect with our young adults in order to help them become more invested in their learning environment. This in turn should help boost student morale, grades, and assist with better attendance. Please call us throughout the year if we can support your child or you in any way.
