LETTERS TO THE ED
Paula’s farewell letter was intensely moving and inspiring. She wrote with great
humility and generosity of the debt she owes
to her fellow JL colleagues, but ultimately, it is
always the editor’s final choice that sets the tone
for a publication which constantly renews our
grateful pride in being Jewish. To have been the
editor of a magazine of such awesome worldwide stature could only have been achieved
through her own profound Torah insights and
value system.
No doubt we all wish her abundant happiness
and success in all she does and to thank her for
bringing us all to new heights of understanding
and insight into Judaism.
In welcoming our brave new editor, I wish him
continued success as he brings his own imprint
into Jewish Life to go forward to ever greater
achievements.
EDNA FREINKEL
Dear JL,
I just wanted to
say how outstanding I
found your Shavuos issue.
I was particularly moved by
your article entitled ‘Hearing
the call of the Silver Bird’. In it the author tells of a
visit to the Ellis Island museum where hundreds
of Jewish artifacts reside, including the Silver Bird
- which was an ornate basamim holder. These
objects had all been recovered at that point of
immigration - abandoned by Jewish families eager to shake off their past.
I couldn’t help seeing an unfortunate parallel
between this museum, and a terrifyingly perverse
one, envisaged by Adolph Hitler, yimakh shemo,
which was also planned to be overflowing with
Jewish artifacts. The name of this museum was to
be “The Museum of an Extinct Race”. I will leave
readers to draw their own conclusions.
