We started our revamp editorial meeting with the principal objective of creating something that more accurately reflects the shape and dynamics of the trade today. And this is absolutely appropriate - in my six years as editor of the magazine, a lot has changed. The ways jewellery is designed, created, marketed and sold have become more multivariate. New technologies have not only pervaded the market, but matured and improved in their quality. Trade shows have become less relevant. Industry bodies have merged, morphed and seen many from the old guard replaced with new blood. The arc of success for some of the biggest mass-market brands appears to have reached and surpassed its apex. Challengers have come and gone. But one thing remains: real design talent is harnessing the new dynamics to make ever more beautiful and inventive pieces. The scope of the real artistry in British jewellery design has become wider, despite the challenging economics, and the internet age has lowered barriers to entry. Our new-look magazine aims to reflect this evolved market and the characters in it. You’ll find seven new regular sections designed to ensure we’re regularly shedding light on what people are doing in a range of disciplines, from the benchwork and manufacture to analysing consumer tastes and selling jewellery online. And to top it all off, the new design and layouts speak to an industry for which aesthetics are why many of its members get out of bed in the morning. We hope you like what we’ve done with the place, and enjoy digesting the jewellery trade’s best through a renewed and improved editorial focus.
