JANET FITCH TREND-WATCH A busy June kicks off the summer J ‘‘ It’s the season for hats, and The Season Hats creations are irresistible to jewellery lovers, lavishly embellished as they are with Swarovski crystals and pearls ‘‘ 18 JEWELLERY FOCUS une is so busy this year with everything from an election, father’s day, Ascot, Wimbledon, festivals, garden fetes galore, GCSEs and graduations. Jewellery graduates from over the UK are showing their degree collections at New Designers, Part One (28 June -01 July) at the Business Design Centre in London. This year’s One Year On is 25% larger, with 18 jewellery designers who now have work experience and a career path. Chloe Lewis is a 2016 graduate of the University of Dundee, Duncan of Jordanstone, a contemporary art jeweller combining her passion for the environment and love of experimentation and metal work skills to produce statement jewellery highlighting the issue of rising sea temperatures in the Arctic. Since graduation Chloe has developed a commercial collection, ‘Impacts of Climate Change’ exploring temperature fluctuation through drop water casting using pewter. The resulting ice and frost flower clusters of glass and resin on silver earrings, rings and pendants are now selling at www.notonthehighstreet.com Dovile Kondrasovaite is a Lithuanian jewellery artist and graduate of Vilnius Academy of Arts, who has been teaching jewellery making in Vilnius as well as producing her own collections. Dovile moved to Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter at the end of 2015, broadening her outlook and creativity, resulting in the collection ‘Flow’ inspired by the Mamm + Myrgh Nambé Jewelry Mateu Gallery energy of flow and growth, that she is showing at OYO 2017 - organic and natural shapes in natural raw Baltic amber and bog oak. Mamm + Myrgh is a mother- and-daughter team of goldsmiths based in Cornwall. The name means mother and daughter in the ancient Cornish language. Mother Amanda Maltwood is an experienced goldsmith, daughter Greta Kaniok is a jewellery designer with expertise in CAD design and sales consultancy. The collection showing at OYO 2017 references the sculptural forms and textures along the rugged and wild Cornish coastline, and in addition to new styles in silver they are introducing a small range in solid 18ct Fairtrade gold. (www.newdesigners.com) Last year I profiled the Central St. Martin’s Jewellery Design MA degree show collection, Per Inciso, (to be engraved) of Giada Giachino, using sustainable alternatives to traditional coral and cameo production derived from lobster fishing industry waste, with a similar subtle colour palette. This year, Giada launched the commercial version of the collection at Pulse London in May to target high-end independent stores: wearable pendants, chokers and rings in nude and brown. The shells are cut by skilled experts in Naples, and sent to Giada’s London studio, to be set in resin and sterling silver.
