Everledger showcases diamond Data Matrix code
Everledger and Dharmanandan Diamonds have successfully showcased a new innovative feature with the inscription of Data Matrix code on diamonds , as part of a ‘ Diamond Time-Lapse Protocol ’.
The Diamond Time-Lapse Protocol , launched in February this year , is the industry data protocol using blockchain to track the provenance of diamonds .
A Data Matrix code , which is a twodimensional code consisting of black and white ‘ cells ’ or modules encoded with data , is inscribed on the girdle of a diamond , providing a mechanism to cryptographically sequence information about the diamond . This information includes the origin of manufacturer , unique serial number and object details . The use of Data Matrix code was selected due to its ability to encode a large amount of data in a small amount of space and has been popular in asset tracking , and is underpinned by the use of rolling code to ensure that only a unique code is generated .
With this , Everledger has enabled an IoT ( internet of things ) bridging of the digital twin of a diamond ’ s provenance on the blockchain with the physical diamond , which brings about a concurrency of identity . Fully implemented with Dharmanandan Diamonds , this ensures the veracity of the diamond ’ s information encoded and subsequently viewed by the user .
A Mobile Inscription Viewer is available to scan the code and is integrated with the Diamond Time- Lapse iOS and Android applications developed by Everledger , for the user to view the diamond information .

$ 17bn of emeralds gold and silver found in shipwreck
A shipwreck off the coast of Columbia has been discovered estimated to be carrying a cargo worth $ 17bn (£ 12.7bn ), including gold , silver , and emeralds .
The shipwreck is that of the San José , a Spanish ship that was sunk by British forces during the Spanish Succession in 1708 .
The discovery was made by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution ( WHOI ) nearly 2,000 feet deep in the waters off Cartagena with the help of an autonomous underwater vehicle . The ship was identified by its 62 bronze cannons that feature a distinctive dolphin engraving .
In a statement the WHOI said : “ The wreck was partially sediment-covered , but with the camera images from the lower altitude missions , we were able to see new details in the wreckage and the resolution was good enough to make out the decorative carving on the cannons .
“ MAC ’ s lead marine archaeologist , Roger Dooley , interpreted the images and confirmed that the San José had finally been found .
“ Once again , WHOI ’ s expertise in AUV technology and operations has resulted in an important discovery . We are pleased to have played a part in settling one of the great shipwreck mysteries for the benefit of the Colombian people and maritime history buffs worldwide .”

Chow Tai Fook and GIA to bring blockchain diamond grading reports to consumers
Jewellery brand Chow Tai Fook and the Gemological Institute of America ( GIA ), a diamond grading authority , will use blockchain technology to deliver digital diamond grading reports to consumers for the first time .
Clients of Chow Tai Fook ’ s diamond brand will receive a permanent and immutable blockchain record of their diamond ’ s GIA grading information . This service will first be piloted in selected Hong Kong stores before expanding to other locations at the end of 2018 .
The initiative was developed with blockchain solutions provider Everledger and is secured by the IBM Blockchain Platform .
Leanne Kemp , Everledger CEO , said : “ We are delighted to be working with two industry giants to provide assurance for customers through our pioneering work with blockchain technology for the diamond industry .”
Kent Wong , managing director of Chow Tai Fook , said : “ We are very proud of our cooperation with GIA which gives our customers additional assurance and transparency , and the opportunity to have both diamond grading and diamond traceability information at their fingertips .”
