SARAH BURNS ALICE RIVER-CRIPPS CATHERINE MARCHÉ Director of Gill Wing Jewellery Managing director of Posh Totty Designs Goldsmith at Jedoco Jewellery Designers Yes, I think they are a great idea and about time. We notice our customers are far more concerned about the ethics and environmental effects behind their purchase than ever before. If we can assure them that they are made by scientists in lab coats, rather than the fear that it could be a ‘blood diamond’ we know they will be excited by this new technology. If there is a reduction in price and the quality is still there, then we all win. A few of my customers have chosen to have a lab grown diamond or a moissanite for their engagement and wedding rings as they disagree with mining practices. These clients value ethical jewellery, they are environmentally conscious and also like the price difference allowing them to choose a bigger stone for a gentler price tag. As a jeweller, I enjoy my role of satisfying my clients’ needs and wishes for years to come. The magic of a diamond comes from the mystery of the creation. Millions of years of natural forces turn a rather unassuming mineral like carbon in to a sparkling treasure. Customers fall in love with this romance. The chance creation mirrors something of the symbolism of falling in love. Although there are excellent ethical reasons for choosing lab grown gems, it is hard to emulate the symbolism from this process.
