NY’ s MoMath has your number
In a city famed for its houses of learning, its cutting-edge exhibitions and its world-class performance spaces, a new museum has opened, dedicated to something most of us would happily forget. The only math museum in the US, New York’ s new MoMath, which opened in December, features dynamic, interactive exhibits and programs geared to families and adults, with the hope of sparking curiosity and revealing the wonders of math. An ideal spot if you’ re looking to escape the chills of Spring, the new museum is spearheaded by Glen Whitney, a hedge fund manager turned mathematics advocate, and follows on the heels of the successful Math Midway, a popular travelling exhibition that offers an interactive, hands-on tour of mathematical concepts in a carnival-style pop-up. Among the more than 40 exhibits, look out for the Feedback Fractals, which uses ordinary video cameras to produce intricate and beautiful infinitely repeating patterns, and the Wall of Fire, where visitors interact with a room-high plane of laser light to discover the hidden shapes lurking in everyday objects. www. momath. org www. jetsetter. hk
