Molecular diagnostics
My consulting company- Exponential Business Development- flourished for many years after returning from America and allowed me to work in a variety of industries with a focus on entrepreneurial life sciences and healthcare organizations. I leveraged my previous worldwide experience with a Fortune 500 Company( Johnson & Johnson) and my 10 years Australian business experience in medical specialist practices. Consulting business is cyclic and income each year fluctuated but it was all very interesting and learning about science was always motivational. The scope of my consulting was wide and included strategic marketing, technology commercialization, business development, advertising, media / investor relations and support for capital raising that was used to support primarily entrepreneurs. All up, I assisted in raising over $ 40 million in private equity over several years for private companies and it was always fun and challenging. Some of these organizations continued onwards and became Australian stock exchange listed companies. I was also listed in Who’ s Who in Business in Western Australia for two consecutive years.
Additionally, I was involved with setting up one of the biggest not-for-profit medical research organization and helped raise the initial $ 20 million that jump started the Western Australian Institute of Medical Research( WAIMR). I had approached the Board Chairman of a large Australian Stock Exchange listed company called Wesfarmers with a view towards setting this institute up. Mr Harry Perkins told me to get all of the universities in town to work as one business unit and he would support the concept by bringing in his commercial peers. I was able to do this and Harry lived up to his end of the bargin. After preparing some very compelling information about WAIMR, I convinced Harry to have his company donate the first sum of $ 5 million. The extraordinary comment then followed. I thanked Harry for his incredible gift and said that I needed to now recruit his help to get a further 15 million in donations. He accepted my offer and I provided him with training and motivation as he systematically approached his friends, colleagues and others and brought in a further $ 10 million in donations. Harry was the nicest person in the world, but unfortunately passed away several years later. He was an ex farmer and real genuine individual. He would pop by my office regularly to brag about his efforts or ask for helpful hints. When I was in the city, I would call him up and he would always tell me to come by for a coffee. We received the remaining $ 5 million from the public after announcing that we had already raised $ 15 million. This organization has substantially grown and is currently constructing a purpose built multi-story building on one of the hospital campuses. It was given over $ 200 million by the State and Federal Australian Governments for this purpose.
