The United Nations has estimated that approximately one third of the world's entire population are directly affected by disabilities. In order to provide this population with equal opportunity options, it will require tremendous effort and support from federal and local governments as well as commerce around the world to update the physical, legal and social infrastructures required to improve overall accessibility.

The United Nations has this to say about accessible tourism: "Accessibility is a central element of any responsible and sustainable development policy. It is both a human rights imperative, as well as an exceptional business opportunity. In this context, accessible tourism does not only benefit persons with disabilities, it benefits all of society".

The theme of the 2017 JEMUN Conference, Sustainable and Accessible Tourism, will celebrate the 2015 United Nations decision to make 2017 “the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development” with four agendas and concrete focal points.
