MEDICINE AND HEALTH SCIENCES

CHANGE STARTS WITH YOU

We always strive to translate our latest discoveries into tangible health benefits . From developing the first prototype of an oral vaccine against Avian Influenza to creating a mobile application to capture possible Aedes breeding sites , our researchers make groundbreaking contributions that impact our communities . If you want to play a role in improving our health and wellbeing , we can help make that happen .
OUR RESEARCH STRENGTHS
NONCOMMUNICABLE DISEASES ( NCDs )
NCDs , or chronic diseases , claim 41 million lives each year . We ’ re looking to change that through research into cardiometabolic and indigenous health , molecular oncology and cancer therapeutics , nanomedicine , proteomics / toxicology , and nutrition and nutraceuticals . By leveraging on Malaysia ’ s rich ethnic diversity , we ’ re achieving a greater holistic understanding of preventive measures on complex and multifaceted conditions such as cardiovascular disease , diabetes , obesity and metabolic syndrome .
NEUROSCIENCE
Through in-depth neuroendrocrinology , neuropharmacology , psychology ( cognitive neuroscience ), and memory research , we ’ re gaining more insight into ageing and brain-related diseases . This helps us in developing new treatments and therapeutic approaches for brain tumours , epilepsy , Alzheimer ’ s , dementia and more , as well as mental illnesses like depression and anxiety .
COMMUNITY RESEARCH
This group draws on our expertise in public health , migrant and refugee health , demographic surveillance and psychology research . We ’ ve partnered with five sub-districts in Johor to build a comprehensive profile of health , demographic and social information . Using a life course approach , we ’ re tracking the role of time and changes in structural , social , political and cultural contexts on individual , family and community health outcomes . This lets us explore specific diseases or risk factors , often studied in isolation , in real life .
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Understanding , preventing and treating complex infections and diseases driven by infection , immunity and inflammation is the core purpose of our research in this important area . The focus of some of our current studies include dengue , Chikungunya , influenza and coronavirus infections . We ’ re also part of collaborative research networks with the US Navy and University of Oxford .
NATURAL BIORESOURCES
Microbiome intervention is a promising approach in enhancing existing treatments for a broad range of diseases . With expertise in microbiome and bioresources as well as natural products , our research in this area interfaces medicine , biomedicine , molecular biology and microbiology to understand the human and environmental microbiome in relation to human health and illness .
OUR RESEARCH PLATFORMS
BRAIN RESEARCH INSTITUTE MONASH SUNWAY ( BRIMS )
BRIMS is an internationally recognised platform of neuroscience research , leading discoveries in addiction , depression , dementia and autism as well as the mechanism of cancer and infectious diseases . With a team of outstanding neuroscientists and research infrastructure , BRIMS is the centre for world-class neuroscience research and training .
SOUTH EAST ASIA COMMUNITY OBSERVATORY ( SEACO )
Located in Johor , SEACO is a research platform in population health and wellbeing focusing on the Segamat community . Using the demographic and health surveillance system , researchers are able to comprehensively track whole populations over time . SEACO has led studies in dengue , stroke recovery , social care and support for the elderly , infant feeding practices , and more .
