A short time later, he buried his second shot from long range to put Jeff up 27-24. Then, with only 12 seconds left in the half, he fed Tre Singleton for an old-fashioned, three-point play that gave the Red Devils a 30-24 lead at the break.
“ A lot of people don’ t know about Shawn, because he’ s been injured a lot,” fellow senior guard Michael Cooper said.“ But that’ s what he’ s brung since we’ ve been playing together in third grade. So when he’ s healthy, he’ s our fourth star out there. It’ s not like we’ re a three-headed snake, he’ s our fourth star when he’ s healthy.
“ He’ s a shooter. They played off of him and he made them pay.”
Boyd made the Tigers pay yet again in the third quarter. His third, and final, 3-pointer put Jeffersonville up 43-36 with 3:34 to play in the period.
“ He came up huge for us in this game,” Singleton said of Boyd.“ I’ m just thankful and I’ m just grateful I get to play with that guy, because he made some tough shots down the stretch that we really needed.”
Boyd came back in during the final frame and played almost all of the extra session as the Red Devils prevailed to claim their second state championship.
Then, to top it off, he was announced as the winner of the Trester Award, which annually goes to a senior who has demonstrated“ excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability.”
He was soon joined on the court by his father, Shawn Boyd, and mother, Dewanda Hunter, to receive the award.
“ It means everything,” Boyd said later.“ Every day I just try to wake up and put my best foot forward, whether that’ s on the court or in the classroom.”
There was one person, though, Boyd wished could’ ve been at Gainbridge on Saturday night.
“ I really did this for my brother, he strengthened me,” he said.“ He passed away a little bit ago, I know he would be here today.”
Boyd’ s future looks bright. He plans to continue his basketball and academic careers at Hanover College.
Saturday night, though, he made sure to leave a lasting legacy at Jeff.
“ I’ m not sure my vocabulary is big enough to describe just how important Shawn has been to our program,” Wilkerson said.“ You’ re talking about a guy who was a two-year starter and then I brought him into the office and asked him to take on a support role. He embraced it and you saw how absolutely unbelievable he was in that role tonight. The way he accepted, and thrived in that role is a huge part of what got us here tonight.”
