It was a fitting finish for the three-year team captain, who had not had the easiest past year.
Last February, Boyd, who had been a starter since his sophomore year, suffered a stress fracture in his leg. It sidelined him for Jeff’ s entire postseason, which ended with a heartbreaking 52-51 loss to Ben Davis in the New Castle Semistate championship.
Boyd returned to the court this season, but it wasn’ t easy. In addition to his continuing recovery from the leg injury, he was slowed by a couple of other injuries, so Jeffersonville head coach Sherron Wilkerson decided to use him in a reserve role.
Then, this past Christmas Eve tragedy struck when his brother( Jalen Baker) was shot and killed.
Boyd, though, battled through it all. He, like his team, began to hit his stride in the second half of the season.
In mid-January, he had 11 points in the Red Devils’ 92-54 victory over rival Floyd Central that began the team’ s seasonending 18-game win streak.
About a month after that, he helped spark the Devils to a 78-59 triumph over archirval New Albany. That night, he came off the bench to score a seasonbest 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting( including 3 of 3 from 3-point range).
That, however, was his last double-digit scoring effort until the state final.
“ Coming into the game I felt good in warmups, but most importantly I wanted to follow the scouting report,” said Boyd, who went in averaging four points per
