position and we’ re going to try to put our best foot forward.”
In the week leading up to the game, social media was awash with posts praising the Tigers. The rest of the state, it seemed, was ready to hand Fishers its second straight big trophy. The state final was simply a formality.
The Red Devils, though, went in with a quiet confidence. After all, they had beaten the Tigers 71-66 in the championship game of the Charlie Hughes Shootout the previous June.
“ We’ re not taking an‘ I told you so’ arrogance approach,” Wilkerson said in the days leading up to the title tilt.“ That’ s not the approach we’ re taking, because we have a tremendous amount of respect for Coach( Garrett) Winegar’ s staff and his program. But we didn’ t get this far by being slouches.”
The Devils proved that on March 29 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Although Jeffersonville got off to a slow start, trailing by three at the end of the first quarter, the Red Devils soon showed that they could go toe-to-toe with the Tigers.
Sparked by Singleton, and Boyd off the bench, Jeff outscored Fishers 22-13 in the second period to lead by six at halftime.
The Red Devils increased their lead to nine in the third quarter before the Tigers trimmed it to 45-42 entering the final frame. It was back-and-forth from there. In fact, it was so close that a winner couldn’ t be decided in 32 minutes so the two teams had to play an overtime.
Late in the extra session, the Tigers took a 66-65 lead on Millen McCartney’ s 3-pointer with 1 minute, 7 seconds remaining.
