“ It’ s hard in the state of Indiana to win back-to-back sectionals and regionals,” Wilkerson said.“ I have to give all the credit to my assistant coaches, coaching staff and the players. The assistant coaches do a great job of scouting our opponents and getting them ready. Then our players, for the last two-and-half months, have done a good job of being able to absorb all that information.”
Next up was the New Castle Semistate.
Jeff faced Mount Vernon( Fortville) and Purdue-commit Luke Ertel in the second semifinal. The Marauders had the Red Devils on the ropes, leading by 10 in the final frame. Jeffersonville, though, ended the game on a 16-2 run for a 63-59 win.
“ Our mental toughness was key,” Wilkerson said.“ We didn’ t shoot it very well or execute any of our offensive sets, and didn’ t get in transition. Mount Vernon did a great job of stopping us in the paint and they took away our identity. It has been a long time since we have been pushed like this and I’ m so proud of the way our guys responded.”
In the semistate final, the Red Devils rode a hot start, a solid finish and a statstuffing performance( 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots) from Singleton for a 56-49 win over Lawrence North.
The victory earned Jeff a date with No. 1 Fishers in the 4A final. The defending state champion Tigers entered riding a 43-game winning streak and with an average margin of victory of more than 24 points.
