The hospitable Mottura family, who own this charming Renaissance manor house, also produces awardwinning, organic wines. At dinner, they pair each course with the perfect wine from their cellars deep underground. JDB recommends their delicious dessert wine, Muffo( never exported!), and the chef’ s wonderful cooking classes so appreciated by the guests. The hotel, whose name translates to“ the porcupine’ s lair,” is surrounded by verdant fields and vineyards and is halfway between Orvieto and Viterbo. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and many are furnished with antiques from the family’ s home in Piedmont. The nearby villages and towns are wonderful to explore as is Civitella d’ Agliano itself which has a fascinating, ever-changing Contemporary Art Park.
