Daring , provocative and exuberantly entertaining , Cabaret explores the dark and heady life of bohemian Berlin as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich . Originally produced in 1961 with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb , Cabaret is the winner of 8 Tony Awards , including Best Musical and Best Composer / Lyricist .
