Raising Awareness and Support for Mental Health & Addictions
For the members of Equilibrium Burlington , Mental Health and Addictions care is a personal priority . Members of the community-based advocacy group includes individuals , families and caregivers facing challenges with mental health and addiction .
Their mission is to bring greater awareness and understanding to mental illness and addictions ; reduce stigma ; advocate for better access to community resources ; and provide a platform for individuals to share their lived experience with mental health and addiction and its impact on their lives .
“ Mental illness does not only impact the person suffering from the illness , it also affects the family and loved ones who want to understand and support this person ,” says Carole , an Equilibrium member . “ Having a forum , like Equilibrium , where individuals and loved ones can go without stigma , knowing that others get it and are there unconditionally to provide knowledge and share life experiences can provide a better understanding , support and hope throughout the unpredictability of this illness .”
In addition to advocacy and community building , Equilibrium Burlington is a proud supporter of the Mental Health & Addictions ( MHA ) program at Joseph Brant Hospital .
In 2021 , members organized and held A Walk to the Lighthouse , which raised more than $ 11,000 for the MHA program . This in addition to their previous Artrageous events , held in partnership with the Art Gallery of Burlington , which raised funds to purchase supplies for art therapy for mental health and addictions clients supported by JBH Wellness House , Summit Housing and Outreach , and the Bridge .
“ We ’ re committed to raising awareness and much needed funds for the Mental Health & Addictions program at JBH ,” says John , another committee member . “ We know first hand the incredible work being done and the impact that generous support can have on the care for patients and their families .”
