A JBH STORY :

Kevin & Debbie Devereux

For Kevin and Debbie Devereux , April Fool ’ s Day was no joke this year .
“ I felt like a baseball bat hit me ,” said Kevin . “ I had pain throughout my body , I had no stamina and felt very lethargic . And Debbie ’ s symptoms were even more severe .”
Kevin and Debbie came to the Joseph Brant Hospital COVID-19 Assessment Centre a few days later after not seeing any improvement . After being swabbed , Kevin said the doctor took him aside .
“ I remember her saying to me ‘ You need to get your wife over to Emergency right away – she ’ s not breathing well ,’” he said .
After a series of tests , Debbie was told to monitor her symptoms for any improvement . The next day , after her symptoms continued to get worse Debbie came back to JBH and was admitted .
“ Our family will forever be grateful for the care Debbie was provided to ensure her full recovery .”

For two days , the staff tried to regulate her breathing , but Kevin got a call late one night that gave him pause . “ They said if your wife doesn ’ t improve , she ’ s going to need to be put on a ventilator ,” he remembers . The next day Debbie was transferred to the ICU where the staff took control of her treatment plan and gave her a series of treatments and she slowly started to see improvement .
Debbie spent 10 days in the ICU , with her son receiving daily reports from the staff and doctors working around the clock to give her the best care . Twenty days later , Debbie had recovered and was discharged .
Kevin and Debbie are both so pleased with the passion and care provided by the amazing team at JBH , and thank the staff who worked tirelessly to make sure they beat COVID .
“ Our family will forever be grateful for the care Debbie was provided to ensure her full recovery ,” Kevin said .
