My high school career begins the in the same place as everyone else; as a freshman with no understanding of the real world or how high school works. I had no job, no girlfriend, and very few friends. My life consisted of going to school early for band and getting home late from band. Due to this difficult scheduale, I had little time for anything other than band and drumline. But as time progressed, life became better and more time was left for fun. I learned how to balance life and band, two things that meant practically the same thing to me, and I made more time for the other things in my life, like friends and video games.

The thing that sticks out to me the most when I think about the early years of high school is my first football game. It was the first time I had ever stepped onto a marching field to perform the half time show. I was playing bottom base drum and we played the third movement of that years show, entitled “Gold Rush”, or as the announcer always said it “GoOoOoOOoOold Rush”. Something that I will always remember about that day is that one of our snare drummers forgot to bring their marching hat, a key part of our uniform. The directors decided that the whole band should just march without hats, to not make her look out of place. The next year, Brandi, the snare drummer who forgot her hat, became drum captain, and she was reminded every game to bring her hat. That show was the most nerve racking thing that I had ever done, and the memory of that first show will be forever stuck in my mind as the day that I became a real member of the marching band.
