Driving Licence?
There has been a lot of
discussion on various expat
forums & Facebook groups
over the past few weeks
about whether or not you
have to exchange your UK
/ EU Driving Licence for a
Spanish one.
This has largely been fuelled
by English language newspapers with headlines stating that ‘Many thousands of
expats MUST change their
licences by January 2015 or
face heavy fines.’
Despite the headline that EU
residents living here for 2
years or more have to change
their licences immediately,
the press release then goes
on to clarify that this only
applies to certain categories
of licences.
Those who need to renew
licences are the following, if
they have lived here since
January 19th 2013 or before & within 2 years of residency
for those arriving since that
date:

Holders of licences with
no expiry date or with
an expiration date (from
date of issue) of 15 or
more years in Group 1
- AM, A1, A2, A, B & BE
Holders
of
Group
2 licences with an
expiration date (from
date of issue) of 5 or
more years - BTP, C1,
C1E, C, CE D1, D1E,
D, DE
It states that this does NOT
apply to holders of the
standard, TEN year EU
photocard licences.
These are legally valid to use
in any EU country by residents from any EU country.
