This commitment was translated
into 7 goals as set out below:
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme
poverty and hunger
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary
education
Goal 3: Promote gender equality
and empower women
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
Improve maternal health
Goal 5: Combat HIV/Aids, malaria
and other diseases
Goal 6: Ensure environmental
sustainability
Goal 7: Develop a global
partnership for development.
The target date for the
achievement of these goals is
2015.
The UN recently released a
progress chart which shows an
assessment of the progress
towards selected key targets.
The chart shows that whilst some
progress has been made, there is
still much to be achieved.

In each subsequent issue, we
would spotlight areas around the
world where action is required to
help people in need.
This would be done by featuring
the great work that charities
around the world are already
doing that aims to meet the
Millennium goals.
