this year . Our ADA trustee , Dr . Linda Himmelberger , noted to the delegation that the use of this term is considered a microaggression . I am pretty sure everyone on the call was surprised by this . All my life we used this term to describe the “ cheap seats ,” whether at a baseball game or the theater , or even the alternate “ peanut heaven ” in the highest decks of a football stadium or arena . Apparently , the original peanut gallery is where the African-Americans used to sit in the theater during the days of vaudeville . Again , who knew ?
The presentation really made you think about words and what they mean and / or how they are perceived to the person you are speaking to . Something that may seem so innocent or innocuous could really be the opposite to another person . It makes you want to take a brief pause and consider what you are about to say just before the words come out . Look for more on microaggressions and the rest of the work of the DITF in upcoming issues of this journal and our other PDA communication outlets in 2021 .
