To address this , the industry must prioritize driver recruitment and retention . Companies need to enhance compensation , offering higher wages , better benefits and improved working conditions to make the profession more appealing . Investing in driver well-being with things such as more home time , mental health support and safer working environments will also help retain experienced drivers .
At the same time , automation and technology can , in some areas , play a key role . While full autonomy may never happen , advancements in driver-assistive technology and autonomous trucking for highway driving can help reduce the labor shortage by improving efficiency and cutting back on the strain on human drivers .
Lastly , the industry must push for regulatory reforms that streamline

training and licensing processes . One example would be lowering the age requirement for interstate drivers and supporting vocational training programs . By addressing these areas , the industry can overcome its driver shortage issue to the US economy .
