Question: " How do I keep my dog ' s paw pads
Ask the Groomer... from getting chapped and cracking in the winter?
Answer: Cold weather, snow, ice melt chemicals, and low indoor humidity can all dry out your dog’ s paw pads in winter. Here are the most effective ways to prevent chapping and cracking: 1. Moisturize the pads regularly. Use a pet-safe paw balm or wax such as Pet Bag Balm or Vitamin-E – based dog balms. Apply 1 – 2 times daily, especially before bed so it absorbs while your dog is resting. 2. Use paw protection outdoors. Dog booties are one of the best winter protections. They prevent Ice and snow buildup, contact with road salt, and excessive dryness from cold surfaces. If your dog won’ t tolerate boots, apply a paw wax before walks to act as a barrier. 3. Rinse and dry your dog ' s paw pads after outside walks. Rinse paws with warm water or wipe with a damp cloth to remove salt and de-icers. Dry thoroughly- moisture between toes can also cause irritation. 4. Keep Hair Trimmed Between Toes. Long fur traps ice balls and holds moisture / salt against the skin. Trim it so it’ s even with the pads( not shorter). 5. Monitor for trouble signs. Seek a vet’ s advice if you notice: Deep cracks or bleeding, limping, licking / chewing at paws, or signs of infection( swelling, redness, odor).
