ABA Delegate Report Winter 2025

Happy winter season to all. The American Bar Association( ABA) recently held its annual conference in Toronto, followed by its House of Delegates( HOD) session. As your ABA HOD representative, I want to provide you with an update of milestone developments that occurred during this session and beyond.
As you may( or may not) know, the Florida Supreme Court recently directed the Florida Bar to end all ABA House appointments for our State. This means members of the Florida Bar, including our members, will be without representation in this national organization.
As previously written, there are some that criticize the ABA by alleging that it promotes a progressive ideology, and would seek to‘ cancel’ ABA involvement. This critique overlooks a fundamental truth about the ABA: it is not an organization confined to any one segment of the legal profession, such as insurance defense, commercial litigators, district attorneys, or even plaintiffs’ advocates. majority of the legal profession, exposed to a wide array of social, economic, and demographic factors, has developed viewpoints that track progressive ideals. This is less a reflection of institutional bias and more a testament to the collective experiences and insights of lawyers nationwide, and how it shapes ones’ perspective on politics and ultimately, humanity.
The current ABA President echoed these concerns when he stated that he had no idea at the time of his tenure that America would face such destructive and persuasive attacks on the rule of law, the judicial system, the profession, and the ABA by its own government.
Everyone is entitled to their perspectives and convictions and we must work together with those sharing differing viewpoints. As Thomas Jefferson said,“ Difference of opinion leads to inquiry, and inquiry to the truth."

Instead, the ABA is a national organization that welcomes all lawyers, regardless of their area of practice or personal beliefs. Its membership reflects a broad cross-section of the legal community across the United States, encompassing diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
