Why A Dementia Diagnosis Matters: Unlocking Support, Treatment And Peace of Mind( Continued)
Now that we have reviewed the risks, lets talk about the hope.
A study was recently published in The Journal of the American Medical Association( JAMA) on July 28, 2025“ Effects of Structured vs Self-Guided Multidomain Lifestyle for Global Cognitive Function: The U. S. POINTER Randomized Clinical Trial that found lifestyle interventions can improve cognition in older adults at risk of cognitive decline.
These lifestyle interventions include the following. Physical exercise: Participants engaged in 30-35 minutes of moderateto-intense aerobic activity four times a week, plus strength and flexibility exercises twice a week. Cognitive exercise: Participants engaged in computer-based brain training programs three times a week for 30 minutes, plus regular engagement in other intellectually challenging and social activities. Nutrition: Participants adhered to the MIND diet, which emphasizes dark leafy greens, berries, nuts, whole grains, olive oil and fish, limiting sugar and unhealthy fats. And finally, Health monitoring: Participants had regular check-ins on blood pressure, weight and lab results.
resistance, protein glycation, vascular disease, nocturnal hypoxemia, hormone insufficiency or dysregulation, nutrient deficiency, toxin or toxicant exposure, and other biochemical parameters associated with cognitive decline with associated treatment of the aforementioned.
Unlike years ago, when getting a dementia diagnosis left the patient and family hopeless, these studies as well as many others have started the cascade toward a possible cure. And I call that hope.
