Dear Greta ,
I was brought up to believe people should be polite to one another . This doesn ' t seem to be priority to most folks anywhere . From cursing openly in public to clerks with lousy attitudes to employees who act like they ' re doing you a favor by taking a paycheck to guests dropping by unannounced . And what is even more appalling is if you react to any of it , you often wind up looking like the crank . For example , some friends of mine dropped by at 10 am on Sunday morning without calling after I had decided to " sleep in ," and they were annoyed with me because I didn ' t get up to entertain them . What gives anymore ? Has the whole world gone nuts ?

Yes , it certainly does seem like the whole world has gone nuts , doesn ' t it ? And you ' re right about the victims of inconsideration often winding up being characterized as " whiners ." What to do about it ? Since , I believe , most rudeness stems from one ' s upbringing , there ' s very little we polite people can do to change inconsiderate ones . The only thing we can change is our reaction to them . It ' s simple , but does take some practice - ignore them and don ' t let them bother you . Ask yourself this ... What do those rude people really mean to your life , anyway ?
