As the first semester of the newly integrated Commonwealth University came to a close , the campus family at Lock Haven University was centered on activity at the Thomas Fieldhouse . As expected , both the women ' s and men ' s wrestling teams moved out to fast starts , with the women attaining a top ten ranking nationwide late in December . The men , solid as usual , saw several of their youngest team members impress in both dual and tournament competition . Mat Town USA was alive again - standing room only at every match . But it was the surprising strength of both the men ' s and women ' s basketball teams that brought fans to Thomas Fieldhouse throughout the weeks before Christmas . Mike Nestor became the winningest head coach in school history , and watched his group , made up mostly of transfers and grad students , become a solid team . almost overnight . In fact , he calls them the best defensive team he has ever coached .
On the other side , the Lady Eagles were more than competitive , at one point knocking off the number 15 team in the country , Cal of PA .
Holiday break comes after finals week , but these four teams will get back to the mat and the court before students return from the semester break - based on what we have seen already , we can expect solid performances . An LHU athlete has taken the initiative to forever remember a former teammate who passed away in the summer of 2021 . Matt Avery and his wife Maureen have established a yearly scholarship to honor Mike " Mouse " Millward , who achieved fame in his time at the school thru 1984 . Millward was named Lock Haven University ' s Outstanding Freshman Wrestler in 1980 , and twice was named the team ' s Most Outstanding Wrestler . He ended his collegiate career with a record of 105-38-3 , including three finishes as runner up of the Eastern Wrestling League , and two runner-up finishes in the PA State Athletic Conference . Avery has provided the capital needed - $ 20,000 - to start the process to provide a $ 5000 yearly stipend to a deserving wrestling student-athlete . The first Mike " Mouse " Millward Scholarship will be awarded during the 2023-24 academic year .
Elsewhere on campus , more and more students are helping to support the Haven Cupboard , established to provide food and basic necessities to current students in need . The Lock Haven President ’ s Commission on the Status of Women ( PCSW ) is providing funding for women ' s hygiene products , available at the Haven Cupboard . The PCSW is a campus-wide committee that helps to ensure equal parity for women in all aspects of campus life for students , staff , faculty , and administrators .
The second semester starts in mid-January ... expect more public outreach as the integration of Lock Haven , Bloomsburg , and Mansfield Universities continues in 2023 .
