Keystone Central Celebrates Veterans
Elementary students and staff gathered throughout all of Keystone Central School District to celebrate the lives of those who serve and have served on Veterans Day . Robb Elementary celebrated its annual Veterans Day program in the school cafeteria that was filled with all grade levels eager to take part in the celebration . It is a tradition for the school to hold an assembly for students and staff to honor veterans .
Principal Tyler Barth welcomed all who attended by saying , “ I would like to welcome our veterans here today . It is an honor to be here in the midst of heroes , so thank you for your service to our country .” The program began with the posting of the colors by Cub Scouts Pack # 661 , followed by the singing of “ The Star-Spangled Banner .” Each grade gave a performance dedicated to veterans in each respective branch of the military including the Marines , Air Force , Navy , Army , Coast Guard , and Space Force .
Kindergarten performed “ Thank You to Our Veterans ,” followed by first grade with the Veterans March . Second grade then took the stage with “ The Heart of America ,” followed by third grade , performing “ Put Your Hand on Your Heart ” and fourth grade rounding out the performances with the “ Allegiance Rap .” The production was conducted by the Robb Elementary music teacher , Patti Sheriff . In between each performance , students and staff gave out certificates to their family members / veterans . The program concluded with the playing of “ Taps ” before veterans and family members came together for refreshments and comradery .
Bucktail High School also welcomed veterans and members of the community , honoring and thanking them for their service to our country . A unique twist to this year ’ s program was the recognition of service dogs and how they have helped fellow human soldiers in battle . Bucktail alumni and veteran Dr . Jodi Wilson spoke about her service as a veterinarian while in the US Army . Dr . Wilson explained how service members serve alongside dogs and shared stories about some of the dogs she has treated . Many breeds of dogs have a place in the military , and Wilson stated that their breed dictates what type of service animal they will be . For example , a Jack Russell is perfect for sniffing out dangers in submarines . She also spoke of Luca , a German Sheppard that served on 400 missions and whose help in detecting IED ’ s played a part in the fact that there were no human casualties in those dangerous situations . Lucas was forced into retirement after a job-related injury .
Dr . Christina Livingston , a recently retired local veterinarian , echoed Wilson ’ s sentiments that dogs serving also suffer physical and mental injuries . She explained what people need to expect when adopting a veteran dog and that there is a great need for adoptive homes . The canine aspect was an educational experience , as the respect of the men and women that have and are currently serving in the US military took center stage .
When introducing the Renovo Elementary students ’ video messages to the veterans , teacher Dan Heiser said that little doubt should remain on what kids think of veterans living in their midst . “ These students know who you are , they know what you did and they respect you for it .”
