Preparing for the Chinese New Year celebration

The Chinese New Year begins February 1 and ends February 11 . One of the longest holidays of the year , the Chinese New Year begins at the start of the lunar calendar and lasts 16 days .
The New Year ’ s Eve dinner , also known as Reunion Dinner , is considered one of the most important family get-together events .

Bill Chiu , owner of Hoy Yeung , located at Blueberry Crossing 240 S . White Horse Pike in Hammonton , will be celebrating with a huge party .
“ We get into a fight with my brotherin-law taking the pig home and stuff ,” Chiu said .
Hoy Yeung has been in Hammonton for over 40 years . Chiu ’ s father founded the business .
“ You got to have chicken . You got to have pork . We have a whole pig , which signifies another thing . We ’ re very symbolic ,” Chiu said .
Chiu said the pig symbolizes good fortune , and chicken symbolizes wealth .
“ If you eat this noodle , you ’ ll live a long life because the noodle extends very long ,” Chiu said .
“ It ’ s all about fortune . It ’ s all about
courageous and active people who love a good challenge and adventure in life .”
“ Tiger is very powerful and strong ,” Chin said .
Next year , 2023 , will be the year of the rabbit , which is Chiu ’ s Chinese zodiac .
“ Rabbit is more business-minded . Smart . Astute . They avoid trouble . They know how to make money ,” Chiu said . Chiu added that his Chinese zodiac and his wife , Karen ’ s are compatible .
“ My wife ’ s a monkey . We ’ re very compatible . Monkey and rabbit are compatible . My wife and I we ’ re married , and we ’ ve been married for over 30 years ,” Chiu said .
Karen Chiu said the Chinese New Year celebration is bigger in China than in America .
“ We don ’ t really do much here . When we ’ re in China , there ’ s a big cel-

Another tradition is lighting firecrackers at night .
“ When we ’ re young , we play firecrackers at midnight . They ’ re not allowing you to do that anymore because of fire reasons . When we ’ re young , growing up , around midnight the whole city lit up in firecrackers . It was very fun ,” Karen Chiu said .
Bill Chiu also shared his memory of firecrackers .
“ Those firecrackers they sell them in rolls , in coils . You can take it to the third floor , drop it down and loop it up twice and when you light it , it keeps going for a good 30-45 minutes ,” Bill Chiu said .
Chin said the Chinese New Year is

“ Chinese New Year used to be my favorite holiday because when you ’ re young , you receive lucky money . You know the red envelopes ? That children get from elderly person to represent that you have good luck , you have good health … That ’ s why they receive the lucky money from the elderly person and we used to love it . Now we grow up . We ’ ve become the ones who give away the lucky money ,” Karen Chiu said .
