“ When I was reading this year ’ s ‘ Rhode Island Red Awards ’ story in preparation for illustrating it , the same thought kept occurring to me . This could only happen in Rhode Island ,” says illustrator Erica Campanella . “ I love that . Not much surprises Rhode Islanders . We expect and , what ’ s more , appreciate the quirkiness in life . And who doesn ’ t need more of that right now ?”
RIM ’ s associate art director , Meaghan Susi , says going behind the scenes to photograph this month ’ s cover story about the zoo is a dream come true . “ I ’ d never heard of a binturong before , but now I can say they are one of my favorite animals . I even got to feed Thistle , the baby binturong , some banana ,” she says . Meaghan admits her day-long photo shoot was full of “ oohs ,” “ aahs ” and “ awwws ,” and that included watching Mishy , the otter , play with a grape while swimming in the water .
