Nerja expats rally round
Last month the Nerja expat community once again came together in support of the local charity Nerja Solidaria . The charity , a local food bank supports 96 Spanish families in Nerja with donations of food , personal products and clothing . Val Thom an expat volunteer at Solidaria had an idea to give each child in the families a gift pack of sweets for Christmas and so posted an appeal on her own Facebook page for donations . and wrap all of the presents . This was a massive undertaking but once again there was no shortage of volunteers as you can see from the photographs below .
Also at Potters Bar Nerja over a two day period a charity auction , raffle and table top sale took place also in aid of Solidaria . Auction items including household electrical goods ,
This sparked a massive response from the expat community and things quickly snowballed . Local resident Pauline Breslin decided to organise a Christmas lunch with the help of Fitzgerald ’ s Bar in Nerja and this raised a fantastic € 400 for the appeal . Money donations also started to pour in from both the local community and back in the UK . In total € 1040 has been raised so far with donations still coming in .
Val decided that with this money much more could be done and the idea evolved to provide each of the families with gifts for Christmas . These included girls and boys gifts , male and female toiletry packs and family gift packs . Each child also received a small sweets hamper .
A group of ladies from Vélez-Málaga called Doll Clothes Volunteers heard about the appeal and donated 36 recycled Barbie dolls . Each of the dolls came with five handmade outfits and in a handmade bag .
A day was organised last month at Fitzgerald ’ s to put together
homemade cakes , cleaning and driving services were donated for sale . Due to Covid restrictions only 30 people were allowed to attend but a fantastic € 2251 was raised . A big well done to the Friends of Potters Bar .
Val said that she was totally taken aback by the fantastic response from the local expats and would like to thank all those who gave up their time to help . Thanks also go to Fitzgerald ’ s , Potter ’ s Bar , Cullens Leisure , Doll Clothes Volunteers and Costa del Fit Club for their help and donations .
