CAS Update
Wow . What a year to remember , what a year to forget . If there is any word to describe the Covid crisis , in terms of animal rescue , it is wrenching . Successful rescues and rehomings were stalled by travel restrictions , fund-raising events ground to a halt , and despite the Costa Animal Society ’ s ( CAS ) best efforts , it was impossible to attend to all requests for help .
Prior to the initial lockdown , the CAS shop in Nerja was on a pace to raise significant income to cover vet bills , sterilizations , foster care , etc , of dogs and cats in our care , though of course everything ground to a halt . When closure ended , albeit with significant and certainly justifiable restrictions , both staff volunteers and customers returned , though at half-capacity . Having said that , there were many generous on-line donations and when the opportunities arose , with the fantastic support of Fitzgeralds Bar in Nerja , we were able to hold a few quiz nights and a very successful Christmas Fayre . This attests to the best of human nature , that people still find it in their hearts to dwell not only on the human devastation of the pandemic , but the filter-down effect of animals left abandoned and / or remaining homeless . CAS promises to do all that we can in 2021 , as we have for the last 29 years , within the budget of shop sales , events , memberships and donations . Thank you all for your support . Best wishes for a Happy New Year !

Brandi
Brandi is a two-year old female Podenco Andaluz rescued by a Danish couple who were here on holiday about a year ago . She was initially placed in kennels but was quite timid at first and it took her a few weeks to come out of her shell . One thing that contributed to Brandi ’ s lack of confidence is a deformity in both of her front paws that causes her to have flat
Brandi feet and to walk on her wrists , which we think is painful and limits her mobility . An initial examination by our local vet indicated Brandi ’ s deformity was probably caused by malnutrition as a pup and might be corrected with a special diet so she was put onto prescription biscuits for several weeks . However , her condition did not improve and by then it became difficult to arrange a consultation with the orthopaedic surgeon in Torremolinos during lockdown .
In the meantime CAS was able to move Brandi into a foster home with a lovely English couple who gained her trust with patience and care over several months as she learned to live a domestic life . When we were able to travel within Málaga province again , the couple took it upon themselves to take Brandi to visit the specialist for an in person examination . He determined her feet could be repaired with surgery but at a cost of € 1800 , not including follow-up physiotherapy .
CAS then set up a special Go Fund Me page for Brandi ’ s operation which managed to raise € 1470 plus two volunteers , Laura and Linda , organised a Brandi stall at the CAS Christmas Fair which earned an additional € 235 for the cause . With nearly all the funds sorted Brandi ’ s corrective surgery has been scheduled this month and she will soon be on the mend . Brandi ’ s Christmas wish came true as her foster parents fell in love with her while caring for this special dog and they have decided to make Brandi a permanent member of the family .
Available for Adoption
Juno the old gent is still looking for a forever home . He was rescued from the campo earlier in the year and was suffering from a chronically abscessed tooth that had created an ulcerated wound through his right cheek . CAS took the dog to their vet who prescribed antibiotics after removing the bad tooth and Juno was placed in kennels to recover his health with regular meals and a soft bed . Unfortunately , the infected area turned out to be antibiotic resistant and after a few different treatments over the next several months it still persisted as an open wound . After the fourth examination the vet decided to take cultures and send them to the lab to pinpoint which
