The peculiarity of sport is that it not only contributes to satisfying individual and needs such as individual fitness , fun , and wellbeing , or business needs such as employment , corporatization but also produces external effects like social integration , socialization , democracy , and public health . It , therefore , is behooving for leaders in governments to improve infrastructures and ensure adequacy to increase sport participation .
Visionary leadership is necessary if the infrastructure gap in Africa will be bridged
Providing adequate sport infrastructure in the African continent differs from country to country , community to community as this is determined by the sport that is widely adopted for participation in a community . Different sports require peculiar facilities while a few can share ; for example , Football , Rugby and Athletics can share the same facility ; Basketball , Handball , Softball and Netball can share the same arena . Swimming , Beach Volleyball and Water Polo can share one pool .
The nature of the chosen sport can determine the choice of structure for a community . For policy makers it is important to know which infrastructure is needed to increase sport participation . Infrastructure gap is an epileptic disease suffered across most countries in the continent . An effect which has denied it the societal and economic gain of sports . The best sports talents in the world are arguably Africans but it is highly dubitable they will reach the heights they do , if they remained in the continent without the proper investment and attention that should go into sports infrastructure to help them develop .
