FEATURE them to Laotian textiles, and one can watch weavers at work at handlooms. Classes on natural dyeing, Hmong batik, silk- and bamboo- weaving, and handicrafts from different ethnic groups are also held here. @Shutterstock.com ACROSS THE NAM KHAN RIVER Walking to the far end of the main street, one can take the bamboo bridge across the Nam Khan River to cross over to a quieter area with textile galleries. Patta Textile Gallery has a wonderful collection of handwoven textiles, scarves, and garments crafted by designers and weavers of the gallery. There is a woman at Patta, who demonstrates weaving techniques as she goes about her work. The remaining artisans who weave, embroider, crochet, and knit, work from home as per designs given by Patta. A little ahead is Lao Textile Natural Dyes, managed by master weaver Bang On Douangdala, who specialises in handmade, naturally dyed silk and cotton textiles. There is a prized collection of antique textiles from different regions on display, apart from textiles for sale. A group of weavers weave at the centre and orders are taken for customised weaves. STORES AND INITIATIVES There are many more textile and garment stores and initiatives that are taking shape at Luang Prabang. Among them is Khinthong Lao Silk, owned by weaver Khinthong Zayalath, which specialises in textiles made by women of the Tai Daeng group. These textiles stand out for their intricate patterning; and the store has a stunning collection of them. Hilltribe Heritage works on giving old textile treasures a new lease of life by repurposing sections of beautiful old textiles of the Hmong community; the store has attractive garments designed by harmoniously incorporating old pieces into stylish attire. Another store supporting Lao’s artisans is Ma Té Sai, with clothing and other products. The Weaving Sisters an initiative of two Katu sisters from Salavan province in Southern Laos offers classes in backstrap weaving. And if one would like to try out a traditional Laotian garment, then Sao Sinh is the place to be at, as it offers a range of traditional garments for women and men on rent, in an attempt to extend the complete experience of Laotian textiles and attire!
