Largest investment budget for Nerja

Nerja ’ s budget for 2022 totals more than € 37 million , up 21 per cent on the figure for last year . The detail was initially approved by councillors during December . businesses , is allocated € 300,000 , while the contingency fund will be available to aid those who have suffered from the countryside fire near Maro at the end of November .
Three tenders have been received for the project to upgrade Nerja ’ s calle Bajamar , which the town hall advertised with a budget of € 395,000 . Work will include sanitation and water supply , drainage , electricity supply , public lighting and telecommunications , as well as new pavement , road and parking area , urban furniture and road signs . Bajamar is a steep hill which gives access to the town ’ s Burriana beach .
Caritas grant
Nerja has made an extraordinary grant of € 40,000 to Cáritas which will help local families most affected by the current health , social and economic crisis . Cáritas aid programmes are aimed at feeding people in need , basic supplies of electricity , water and gas for vulnerable families and accommodation for the homeless . The councillor for social services , Daniel Rivas , said that , “ through this grant , Cáritas will be able to continue work at its two headquarters located in the parishes of El Salvador and San Miguel .”
Plant progresss
Nerja has started on the work necessary for the town ’ s new water treatment plant to be transferred to the municipality . At present , it is under the control of the Ministry of Ecological Transition while tests are completed . However , Nerja continues to disagree with the application of cost recovery by the Ministry which could cost the town € 7 million .
New parking
The project to construct a new car park in Maro has been given the go-ahead . A plot of 4,449 square metres at the west entrance to the village will be adapted to create 145 parking spaces . The work , part of the Extraordinary Municipal Plan for Infrastructures and Equipment for the Promotion of Local Employment , is expected to be put out to tender soon .
Cash for investments is up by 129 per cent to almost € 8.9 million , while the social services budget honours commitments made last year in emergency plans following the coronavirus crisis . It includes € 400,000 for direct financial aid , plus € 180,000 for extra staff .
A million Euros will be used to provide 11 affordable rental homes for young people , while € 145,000 is set aside for the homes rehabilitation project . Municipal aid will continue for vulnerable families while free urban transport for the over-65s and children will be maintained .

Coastal footpath
The provincial government has granted Vélez-Málaga € 1.2 million to develop almost 2.5 kilometres of the future coastal footpath , the Senda Litoral . The stretch between Chilches and Benajarafe will be tackled in three sections , with a completely new pedestrian walkway along its entire length , the installation of wooden walkways , and improved accessibility to the beach . The environmental and landscape regeneration of the area will be improved by forbidding the parking of vehicles and eliminating exotic plant species .
Triple shake
Three minor earthquakes were recorded last month in the Axarquía . The first on December 7 below Canillas de Albaida registered just 1.7 , while the second the next day below Torrox was also low level at 1.6 The third , of magnitude 2.6 , was recorded on December 9 south-west of Rincón de la
Rates , taxes and bonuses which were frozen to help economic recovery in the municipality will continue unchanged . The 25 per cent discount on the Industrial Garbage Rate , the Occupation of Public Roads and the Economic Activities Tax are included , while other municipal taxes and rates also remain unchanged .
Nerja ’ s mayor , José Alberto Armijo , described the plans as the town ’ s largest investment budget in history . “ It prioritises social spending ,” he said . “ with the aim of continuing to help needy families , and consolidate economic recovery , making the City Council the main economic engine - a generator of wealth and employment .”

Fruit sponsor
The Axarquía subtropical fruit company , Sigfrido Fruit , has become a sponsor of Antonio Banderas ’ cultural project , the Soho Caixabank Theatre in Málaga . The company says it will collaborate in the Theatre ’ s promotion of culture , education and initiatives , and will be present in them through its image . A formal agreement was signed last month with Banderas .
Better lighting
Upgrades on lighting two main roads into Torrox will mean 11,700 kilos less carbon dioxide will be emitted into the atmosphere . The use of new LED bulbs will also cost the town over € 14,000 less per year in power charges , according to Torrox ’ mayor , Óscar Medina . He said the replacement of 109 lamps at a cost of € 40,000 will save an estimated 46,800 kWh ( kilowatt hours ) per year .
