Fire devastates Maro farmers

Spain ’ s first Wimbledon champion , Manolo Santana , died aged 83 on December 11 in Marbella . He also had two French Opens and one US Open to his name . Rafa Nadal paid tribute to his colleague saying , “ You were always a benchmark , a friend and a person close to all of us .”
Tachograph tampering
Three people are under investigation after a 38-ton lorry was stopped in Alfarnate and was found have had its tachograph machine tampered with . A hidden unit enabled the driver to stop the device recording the time during which the vehicle was in motion . Those being questioned are the lorry ’ s owner and driver , and the manager of a workshop alleged to have overseen installation of the illegal unit .
Drugs gang
A major drugs operation based in Granada has broken up a gang which exported marijuana to elsewhere in Europe and then laundered the profits . Sixteen people were detained last month in the city , as well as in Almería and elsewhere , with € 500,000 in cash seized . The gang had ten properties in Granada , most of which were uninhabited and used for the propagation and packaging of the drug .
Roof renewal
Nerja is contributing € 10,000 to the cost of upgrading the roof of San Miguel church in Barriada de las Protegidas . The move was made to support the Bishopric of Málaga which is undertaking the renovation at a total cost of almost € 117,000 . In the project , the entire roof , which dates from 1980 , will be replaced using higher quality materials .
A fire started by burning stubble has destroyed more than four hectares of produce and buildings on land near Maro . The blaze broke out in Caleta de Maro at 10.00am on Sunday , November 28 , and was fought by 30 fire fighters plus air support before being finally extinguished around 7.00pm the following day .
At its height , the fire forced police to close the N-340 road north of the outbreak in the Maro – Cerro Gordo Natural Park . Infoca said 36.6 hectares of land were affected , including 2.6 hectares within the park , much of which is owned by the Azucarera Larios S . L .
A total of 20 families have been affected directly with several losing their means of making a living after fourteen greenhouses were destroyed , The produce lost as a result , including avocados , bananas , custard apples , mangoes and beans , has been valued at € 300,000 .
One family who have been building a new home for two years lost everything while on Maro beach , a leisure business lost 90 kayaks and two zodiac boats with damage totalling around € 60,000 .

Torrox Budget 2022

Councillors in Torrox have approved the municipality ’ s general budget for 2022 which totals € 24 million , a rise of eight per cent on last year . Included is € 3.2 million for investments , the highest in the town ’ s history .
Projects planned include the acquisition of land at La Rabitilla for construction of a parking lot ; the remodelling of the Plaza de la Constitución ; an artistic lighting project in the municipality ; the second phase of the green park on Avenida de El Faro ; street lighting of the N-340 in Calaceite ; and a Museum of the Sea .
Cleaning services will be modernised , while construction of the new El Morche football field will begin , as well as the project for a new funeral
Nerja ’ s mayor , José Alberto Armijo , says the municipality ’ s budget for 2022 will include help for those who have lost property and produce in the fire , while an on-line fund-raising campaign ( gofund . me / 16c0bea3 ) passed its target of € 10,000 within a couple of days . The money is being used to help to buy clothing and food , as well as rebuilding houses .

Mayor Óscar Medina , said the government team had managed to maintain an investment budget which shows the town ’ s good financial health . Finance councillor Paula Moreno added that the team intended to keep the financial debt at zero .
Occupancy rates
The Association of Hotel Entrepreneurs of the Costa del Sol ( Aehcos ) says Nerja ’ s hoteliers achieved 61.5 % occupancy in November , with Frigiliana-Torrox reaching 60 %. Throughout the province of Málaga the figure was 57 %, three points higher than forecast . Málaga city led on 74.9 % followed by Antequera ’ s 72.6 %.
