In this issue , we return to the baseline issue of where the provision of TV transmission is headed . The answer , as it has been for some years , is in one direction and that direction is IP .
But the speed of travel and the roadmap at hand varies market to market and territory to territory . There are still large parts of the world where OTA dominates and will for the foreseeable future . There are also parts of developed markets where broadband provision remains poor and alternative solutions , like DTH , still play a part .
A hybrid approach looks likely for some time to come , both in terms of reaching the end viewer and as parts of the path from origin . For instance , satellite is used often to shift bouquets of channels from origin to IP hubs .
Nonetheless , as hi-speed broadband spreads , and 5G establishes itself , the transition to IP TV remains unstoppable .
AI will doubtless play a part as an aid to further compression , bringing IP TV within the scope of lower broadband speeds . But it is not central to this debate – which makes a change . It is , after all , at the heart of most media debates .
Everyone is wrestling with AI versus creativity . And , for now , the battlelines are being ever more indelibly drawn . As I write , the Oscars are being announced . A perfectly good indie film has come from behind to outrun a strong field to receive record accolades . And , without wanting to rain on their parade , that is because the out-the-gate favourite , The Brutalist , was found to have used AI tuning on a small piece of Hungarian dialogue .
We will return to this …
