’ ve always loved sport and playing football was a massive part of my life growing up in Germany. My passion for the game was a big part of my decision to move abroad and study sports science in the UK, the first step on my path into elite sporting environments. After completing my studies, I moved to Australia where I started off as a sports science intern in domestic football before following my then boss into rugby league – eventually working with the NSW State of Origin team. After a short spell there, I made the switch back to football and am now in my 10th year of travelling with the Socceroos.
The science of sport includes everything – nutrition, biomechanics, physiology – but strength and conditioning, or fitness training, is an important part of what I do.
Whether you’ re an amateur, recreational or pro athlete, this type of training forms the very foundation of what it means to be competitive in any sport. And it’ s not just relevant to sporting performance, fitness training is essential for overall quality of life. Strength and conditioning can help you become pain free, enable longevity and mobility in old age, and aid in recovery from illness or management of a chronic illness. For people with diabetes, cancer or heart problems, research shows that strength and conditioning can have a significant impact on quality of life.
But getting over that first hurdle can sometimes be the hardest part. Here are seven steps to help set yourself up for success. >
