March 4 , 1797 , John Adams was Elected President of the U . S .

John Adams was first in many things . He was the first-born child , the first Vice President , and the first president to live in the White House . However , he was the second President of the
United States . Today , we know him as the man on the $ 2 dollar bill .
Adams was born on October 30 , 1735 , present day Quincy , Massachusetts . His parents , John and Susanna , were descendants of Mayflower Pilgrims ; they had great expectations for Adams . As soon as he was old enough , he had a Bible in his hands . At that time , ministry was the highest position a person in America could achieve . Unfortunately , Adams hated school . Because he was easily bored and he had a strict teacher , he often skipped school . When Adam ? s father confronted his son , Adams simply told him that he wanted to become a farmer just like the senior Adams . Adam ? s father made Adams Jr . work very hard on the farm to show Adams that being a farmer should not be his goal in life . Finally , Adams Jr . decided to get an education . Adams was accepted at the only

college in the colony , Harvard , at fifteen years old . He graduated four years later .
John Adams Sr . expected Adams Jr . to go into ministry , but Adams Jr . did not have the temperament for that . With no other ideas in mind , Adams Jr . became a schoolteacher . People wondered if Adams would ever live up to his family ' s expectations . Adams could see the courthouse across the street from the school . He visited many times . He decided to study law and government . Tragedy struck on May 25 , 1761 , when his father died . According to History . com , Adam had to put his ambitions on hold . He went back to the family farm wondering if he would ever get the job his father had wanted him to have .
According to Britannica . com , Adams married Abigail Smith in 1764 . They had their first child , John Quincy Adams who grew to be the sixth President of the U . S . They also had three more children : Thomas , Charles , and Susanna . Unfortunately , Susanna did not live past infancy .
In 1775 , the Revolutionary War began . In 1776 , Adams was offered the job of writing the Declaration of Independence , but said Thomas
