Despite what Kate Middleton’s plethora of heels would have you believe, British fashion can be a little freaky. During the first few days of London Fashion Week spring 2019, we’ve seen some experimental outfits. For instance: One woman wore a billowy polka-dot blouse with a plaid skirt along with a turquoise scarf and green shoes. If New York Fashion Week tends to be streamlined and sleek, London Fashion Week is its maximalist foil.

Suiting is a favorite trend on both sides of the pond. Yellow belted suits, peach corduroy suits, pajama-like suits: anything goes, as long as it matches. Bike shorts are also here to stay — love them or hate them, the good news is that they go just as well with a Thrasher tee as with a structured, double-decker-bus-red blazer. If you’re ever at a loss as to what to wear, the Savile Row look still has its place in the sartorial psyche, and you can’t go wrong with a pair of jeans and a plaid blazer. Melodramatic purple is the color of the moment, but peach and (wait for it) brown are vying for second place. The eccentric street style was mirrored on the London Fashion Week runways. Already we’ve seen Simone Rocha’s veiled gowns, and Mary Katrantzou’s trompe l’oeil gowns.
