As Montpelier’s founding director of education, Dr.
Biermann has been involved with Montpelier since
the beginning. She lived on the property; met her
husband, Marty, here; even had her wedding party at
Montpelier. “There would be nights when we would sit
on the porch and we could feel the spirits of James and
Dolley Madison,” she recalls. “I don’t know how else to
say it, we could feel the energy, the intellectual energy
of the Madisons.” Dr. Biermann has seen Montpelier
transform throughout the years. “We are so pleased to
see such a mix of programs, exhibits, and seminars that
are about all of the people who lived at Montpelier
and reach a number of diverse audiences.” Her hope
is for Montpelier to continue to lead the charge of
cultural institutions using the Constitution as a lens to
discuss American history, and she has recently become
part of the Madison Pillars to help support that
mission. “I think Montpelier has made extraordinary
progress in the last 10 or 15 years in moving toward
being a center for Madisonian and Constitutional
studies. I think that is the core of its work.”
