S o u t h Pa s s a g e 2017 - January 2018 U sing the 1844 “Oil Paintings at Montpellier” inventory as well as multiple guest accounts, we recreated the Madisons’ passage gallery. To qualify for inclusion, a painting had to match the subject of the painting listed on the inventory, be from the artistic tradition of one of the countries John Payne Todd visited in Europe, and be in the Old Master style. The Venetian carpet is exactly reproduced from an extant sample from the period and was installed based on tacking evidence. Nearly everything used to furnish this room was purchased with Rubenstein funds. 4
