and held their archives there and so on . But it was not open to the public , and we thought it ’ d be a good idea to have it open to the public .
Q : What are your duties as stationmaster ?
I became a member of the board of directors of the Wayzata Historical Society , and I was put in charge of the Depot Museum . So I ’ m kind of responsible for making sure it ’ s open when we say it ’ s going to be and it ’ s staffed properly and I make sure it ’ s a good experience for the people to visit there .
Q : What kinds of questions do people ask when they step into the museum ?
It ’ s interesting because it varies . Not everybody ’ s interested in the same thing . Some people have a big interest in the railroad history and some people have more of an interest in Wayzata history . And depending on their background and their knowledge , some people might be interested in how old the benches are . It really varies all over the place .
Q : For someone who has never visited , what would you say to encourage them to check out the Depot Museum ?
The depot was an integral part of the history of Wayzata . Actually , this depot was the third one in Wayzata . I tell people when it was built and some of the background on why it was built there and how it fits in with the history of Wayzata itself and how the railroad was a part of Wayzata history .
Q : Do you have any favorite artifacts at the museum that you would tell people to check out if they come in ?
Again , it depends on their interests . Some people are interested in the office that has many of the original pieces of furniture and equipment that was used during the operation of the depot . And I would say that , to me , the office is probably more interesting than the waiting room or anything else . But again , it depends kind of where they ’ re coming from . Different people have different interests . Some people are very interested in the garden railroad outside which runs Saturdays and Sundays .

Q : What was your reaction to being named the grand marshal for this year ’ s James J . Hill Days ?
Number one , it was very surprising . And number two , I was very , very honored .
Q : Anything else you ’ d like to add ?
I ’ d like to think that part of the reason I was named grand marshal has to do with the contribution that the depot and has made to the city of Wayzata . We ’ re very lucky to have the depot because a lot of times when the railroad would close a depot , they would actually tear it down and sell the property . But in this case , everything that was there when it closed is still there today .
