Social Media Responsibility
By: Evyia Makrodimitri
I know that everyone has heard of Tik-Tok, Snapchat, Instagram etc... In fact, 69% of Americans use social media! A lot of people don’t know the dangers of it and the cons. No, I’m not saying that social media has no pros, but society is blind to the consequences of misusing this.
First of all, most people don’t censor out others faces or bodies which is disrespectful and disrupts people’s privacy. And usually they don’t ask permission. One example of this is when I see kids in the locker room taking videos for Tik-Tok or Snapchat, which I’m sure everyone around them feels extremely uncomfortable because they don’t want the world seeing them dressing.
Secondly, you never know who you’re talking to online, so don’t gossip about people. Although that isn’t the biggest issue. People think it’s fine to give anonymous people their number, email or address, not knowing they could be a serial killer for example. Or a criminal. Or just a liar. With social media, you can’t be sure of anything, whether or not you see someone’s face or not.
Thirdly, you shouldn’t give out private information on social media. For example, your name, your address, your number, your school, because someone could come there, or search up theé rest of your information on google or the rest of you social media.
Finally, it’s a lot harder to figure out how someone is feeling when something bad is going on in their social media, and if something is going on there, it’s a lot harder for people to come and help you, so you should actually tell someone if something is weird or concerning you that you see.
I know not many people will care or take this seriously, but that is one of the main problems about social media. No one ever follows the rules and usually, there aren’t any. I think people should be more cautious online, because you can’t ever be sure of anything on it.
