Opening statement : [ Researcher introduces herself , restates the aims of the study as set out in the information sheet sent out to participants , and thanks the participant for agreeing to the interview . The researcher also sets out how data from the interview will be stored and used for research , and confirms the participant ’ s decision regarding being anonymous and quoted in the final research write-up .]
Focus area 1 : Getting to know the participant ’ s teaching experience and music education
These questions were aimed at understanding the general musical and teaching backgrounds of the participants , and to help the researcher decide on the most relevant questions to ask later in the interview .

• Can you tell me more about your teaching responsibilities and involvements ? [ Follow-up question : Which schools or institutions have you taught at ?]
• Please describe the musical education you received . Did you receive private lessons ? Did you attend university ? What musical tradition ( s ) were you educated in ?
