Article #1 The effect of Machiavellianism and Narcissism on Facebook Surveillance The effect of Machiavellianism and Narcissism on Facebook Surveillance Abstract The Dark triad is a term used to refer to the three personality traits Narcissism, Machiavellianism and Psychopathy. The Cambridge Dictionary defines Narcissism as “too much interest in and admiration for your own physical appearance and/or your own abilities” (Narcissism, n.d.) and Machiavellianism as “the use of clever but often dishonest methods that deceive people in order to win power or control” (Machiavellianism, n.d.). Whilst there has been much research looking into the association between characteristics of the Dark Triad and Facebook, very few have looked at how these characteristics could affect Facebook Surveillance. To explore how Machiavellianism may affect the use of social media, research such as Abell and Brewer (2014) found 6
