My stoma and I: Exploring adjustment following stoma surgery and how professionals can improve patient experience pre and post-operatively | Laurie Batchelor Click here to view the poster. In the United Kingdom, around 1 in 500 individuals are currently living with a stoma. Following colostomy or ileostomy surgery, patients can often struggle adapting to their new lifestyle and often feel unsupported by healthcare professionals. Daily physical challenges include altered body image which can affect relationships, and a profound change in diet and bowel habits. Worryingly, Anaraki et al (2012) suggests that patients post bowel surgery are more likely to develop psychiatric problems compared to the general population. In light of this, this presentation will explore how nurses can further support patients transition and improve care in the future. The effect of Machiavellianism and Narcissism on Facebook Surveillance | Michael Batterley Click here to view the poster. Whilst there has been much research looking into the association between characteristics of the Dark Triad and Facebook, very few have looked at how these characteristics could influence Facebook Surveillance. This type of surveillance is based on the way people use Facebook to view the activity of others through looking at their profiles. To study this potential interaction, 230 participants were given a survey consisting of three scales measuring Machiavellianism, Narcissism and Facebook Surveillance. It was found that a significant multiple regression was present between both Machiavellianism and Narcissism against Facebook Surveillance 120 Use of stem cell therapy and induced neuroplasticity in the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease | Pablo Suarez Benitez Click here to view the poster. Ever since James Parkinson first described the neurodegenerative condition named after him the medical community has been both perplexed by its real aetiology and determined to find an effective treatment. In the recent past there have been attempts at alternative methods, which deviate from the traditional approach in the search of a more effective management. Two of them are stem cell transplantation and induced neuroplasticity. Herein lies the purpose of this review: to analyse and critically appraise the advancements in the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease focusing on the possibilities brought forth by stem cell therapy and induced neuroplasticity. Catalysis - How low can we go? | Kate Dickins Click here to view the poster. From human biology to plants to industrial processes: catalysis is key. Lowering the energy requirements for chemical reactions and increasing the rate at which they proceed: catalysts are fundamental for life, but also for producing many things we rely on daily. As climate change becomes an ever increasing threat to our collective future there has never been a greater need to find appropriate catalysts for reactions. However, development of catalysts is a long, expensive process in its own right. This paper will consider some of the impacts catalysts have already made on industrial processes, and key areas of current research.
