research may wish to explore aspects of the Dark
Tetrad to help include this sadistic characteristic.
In addition to this, although Narcissism was
measured during the study, the only form of
narcissism that was measured was grandiose
narcissism. This was problematic as research such
as Dickinson and Pincus supports the idea of
Narcissism being split into grandiose and vulnerable
Narcissism (Dickinson & Pincus, 2003). As a result of
this, we cannot determine whether it was Narcissism
in general that was responsible for the increase
in Facebook Surveillance shown, or whether it
was due to the specific subtype of Narcissism.
Therefore, further research may wish to investigate
how each of the different subtypes of Narcissism
may affect Facebook Surveillance. To explore these
different subtypes, future research may wish to
include the addition of another scale such as the
PNI (Pathological Narcissism Inventory) developed
by Pincus et al (Pincus et al, 2009). This scale would
be beneficial as it measures both vulnerable and
grandiose Narcissism, with the vulnerable aspect
being measured using four subscales.
In summary, the findings of the research suggest
that both Machiavellianism and Narcissism are
factors that influence Facebook Surveillance.
Therefore, supporting the idea that those with these
Dark Triad characteristics are more likely to use
Facebook as a means of covertly accessing other
peoples’ profiles.
